There are 8 pieces in total: 6 plates, 1 caddy base, and 1 caddy lid. The bottom of the caddy is marked with the Zohiko logo. Aside from their apparent traditional intended use as tea ceremony sweets confectionary plates, these small utilitarian mamezara dishes have innumerable uses and are often described as coaster sets, condiment/sauce plates, and trinket dishes, among other things. The dishes and caddy are heavily decorated with a beautiful maki-e cherry blossom sakura design. Zohiko claims to use “only the best cypress wood” to attain the highest quality lacquerware, and describes its gold lacquering process as being done completely by hand using lacquer and pure gold dust polished with deer horn powder and oil. We are unsure as to how old the set is but believe it to be vintage. We also believe these were made in or around Kyoto, Japan. The plates measure roughly 3 1/8” in diameter (about 8 cm). The caddy measures roughly 3 3/4” in diameter and 2 3/8” in height (about 9.5 cm x 6 cm). The combined weight of the set is roughly 6 oz. The dishes have aging, scratches, scuffs, nicks, wear, manufacturing imperfections, some lightly faded areas, and dirty and/or dusty areas (see pictures).
