Description: This listing is for another one of my beautiful and collectible Ruth Gibbs 7 inch Godey Little Lady dolls. She has a china head, hands and feet and a stuffed cloth body. This Little Lady has black hair, blue eyes, and a delicate pink complexion. Her cloth body is white and in quite good condition. Her tiny little feet have been painted gold. Her hand painted features are delicate and serene. Ruth Gibbs employed many different artists to hand paint the faces of her Godey Little Lady dolls, so although they are similar in overall appearance, there are subtle variations in their expressions. This Little Lady doll is vintage and destined in a few years to become a true American antique. She was created in the late 1940s or early 1950s in Flemington, NJ where Ruth Gibbs had a doll factory from the early 1940s until the mid to late 1950s. The original patent for her Godey Lady Book Dolls was obtained in 1948. This Little Lady has been lovingly dressed in what I would call a Southern Belle style outfit. Her dress is made of a delicate, pale pink, shadow stripe, cotton lawn fabric with delicate lace framing the scoop neck and edging the long, full sleeves. The long, full skirt has a wide, gathered ruffle at the bottom and is trimmed with white rick rack. The bodice of the dress buttons at the back with two tiny buttons with loop closures; the waist is sashed with a pink satin ribbon. She wears a wide brimmed, straw, garden party hat to protect her delicate skin from the sun. To complete the outfit I made a lace trimmed petticoat with elastic waist and a pair of lace trimmed pantalettes made in the same fabric as her dress. This is a one-of-a-kind, hand made outfit created to bring out this little doll's femininity and old-fashioned charm. Some of the Ruth Gibbs dolls were originally sold unclothed. They were packaged in special boxes with clothing patterns and instructions printed on the interior surface. This enabled young girls to practice sewing skills by sewing simple outfits for their new dolls. These boxes have often been lost or destroyed and are hard to come by today. Some of the Ruth Gibbs dolls were sold in various styles of period clothing, including storybook and fairy tale characters, brides, debutants, ballerinas, and colonial ladies. I do have some of the original clothing but I have chosen to re-dress most of my Little Lady dolls in fresh, new clothing. I have made up my own patterns as I go along or modified dresses belonging to the 8" Madame Alexander Wendy dolls. The small scale prints in those fabrics work well for the Godey Little Lady dolls. This doll is in excellent condition and owned by an adult doll collector. Her only flaw is that a tiny bit of gold paint has rubbed off her shoes. ~~~ I have done my best to describe this item, but photographs will always tell you so much more.
