Description: 800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Vaseline – amber cased South Jersey Vase Downer Glass Works Offered here is a vase made at the Downer Glass Works, near Glassboro, NJ. Downer was operated by glassblower Tom Zinsky, who worked alone making glass between 1974 and 1994, with the occasional assistance from his father, Anthony. Many Clevenger Brothers Glass Works customers who were unwilling to wait the several months it took produce an order instead came to Downer, who produced ware for them cheaper and faster. The vase offered here is unusual in that it was made in two colors. The base color was Vaseline, made using uranium oxide to achieve a bright chartreuse color when exposed to black / ultraviolet light. The vase was then cased with amber glass, which does not fluoresce, giving the piece a golden color. (The opening and inside of the vase still fluoresce when placed near black light.) When I purchased the vase from Zinsky in 1999, he told me the uranium oxide made the glass much easier to fashion into shape. The vase stands just over 5¼ inches tall. It was made in a rib pattern mold design formerly owned by the Clayton Glass Works / Marks Glass of Clayton, NJ from 1943 to 1950. It has a sand pontil mark on the base, similar to that used by August Hofbauer during his time working in the Vineland area. Excellent condition.
