Description: New 12/23. In the post WWII years, the Wabash Railroad decided to introduce new premium passenger service between Kansas City and St. Louis. Thus, was born “The City of Kansas City,” the Wabash’s first streamlined passenger train replete with American Car & Foundry’s seven lightweight cars. The Wabash competed against the Missouri Pacific and the Rock Island on this 278-mile route. This 240-page softcover tells the story of the development of Trains 3, the daylight train between St. Louis and Kansas City at 8:45AM, and 12, making the return to St. Louis at 3:55 PM. The consist was comprised of a baggage car, baggage-mail car, two 58-seat coaches, a lunch counter-coach, a dining car, and a parlor-observation car at the end. When the Norfolk & Western Railway leased the Wabash in 1964, it maintained “The City of Kansas City.” It was finally withdrawn in February 1968. Other supporting articles cover Wabash parlor cars, assigned E-7 diesel power, “The City of Wabash,” the “Midnight Limited” to Chicago, Wabash service to Mexico City, joint service with the Katy, and more.
