Description: Democrat presidential candidate, Thomas Woodrow Wilson won his seat in the White House in 1912 by only getting around 43% of the vote. That's because two republicans ran against him, former president Theodore Roosevelt and sitting president, Williiam Howard Taft, and they divided the large conservative block of voters. The same thing happened in 1992 with Bill Clinton, when he also only won a plurality against sitting president George H. W. Bush and the spoiler, Ross Perot. When Wilson ran again in 1916, he went up against republican challenger, Charles Evans Hughes, who was a U.S. Supreme Court justice at the time. Hughes resigned that seat and campaigned hard, and the election was so close that some newspapers were printed saying Hughes had actually beat the sitting president. (These are worth some money now adays, just like the "Dewey Defeats Truman" Chicago paper). If Hughes had carried California's electoral votes, he would have won. The U.S. was nervous because Europe was into the bloodbath known as World War I, so Wilson ran on slogans like "He Kept Us Out of War" and other poppycock. That's because, the month after he was Inaugurated in March 1917, he went to Congress for a Declaration of War against Germany and, in only a year and-a-half when the U.S. went into that war, 110,000 Americans were dead. Good thing there was no CNN at the time to report the daily death toll! But Wilson is considered a successful president because he was a Progressive. This 1.25" cello pin has another Wilson re-election slogan on it, "Stand by the President." Running on self-serving patriotism, this even has a 1.5" x 1.25" fabric U.S. flag hanger attached with its rare Walter Brunt San Francisco back paper intact. Believe it or not, the 3-volume, definitive political button reference books done by Ted Hake have this pin valued at $800.00. Which shows you how much things have changed in our political hobby. That's why we're glad we stuck to collecting political postcards. This is in nice condition but please look at our images to judge this for yourself so you can be happy with your purchase. Older pins often have light surface wear and light scratches you can see when tilted towards a light source, and this is no different. We are members of APIC and sell only authentic presidential (and other collectible) material so buy with confidence. We'll be happy to combine S & H costs on multiple purchases which we do by issuing a refund. Shipping on this will be $5.85, carefully packed with tracking, and we'll buy the extra insurance on the package beyond the $100 that USPS provides to protect both of us since this is hard to replace. 9323
