Description: For your consideration I am offering for sale this absolutely Gorgeous Tom Philabaum Reptilian Iridescent Flat-Sided Glass Paperweight 5 1/2" Signed/Dated, 2004 in blue, clear, black striations and iridescent rainbow colors. Tom is known for his Reptilian series of glass paperweights, they come in different sizes, shapes and there are even perfume bottles. This paperweight can sit height wise and also flat, either way it is stunning. It shows differently depending on the background, the amount of light, at which angle the light hits it, etc. I have posted photos outdoors (taken 3/6/2023), with different backgrounds, angles and different lighting scenarios. The iridescence is striking and shows a rainbow of colors (please see photos). One of the photos is of it sitting atop a light source (not included). The last photo is of the signature/date. In excellent vintage condition, it is 5 1/2" tall approximately x 5 3/4" wide approximately at its widest point. Please be advised that I do not accept returns. Tom has since retired from his furnaces due to illness. Information from online: Southern Arizona’s only all-glass fine art gallery, Philabaum Glass Gallery, celebrated its 40th anniversary by honoring five legendary Arizona glass artists during a recent special reception. The 40th anniversary exhibition, which runs (ran) through Jan. 21, features vibrant contemporary new and classic work by renowned glass artists Tom Philabaum, Dan Enwright, Michael Joplin, Carole Perry and Louis Via. “Our 40th anniversary coincides with the United Nations’ International Year of Glass, and so it was fitting that we curate a special show to honor five outstanding glass artists who have helped to elevate the glass movement,” said Alison Harvey, co-owner of Philabaum Glass Gallery. I also recently discovered an article in the Arizona Daily Star that Tom Philabaum sold his glass business to his longtime manager on October 1, 2020. Personally, I wish Tom the best on his new journey of fused glass collage paintings. About Tom and his Reptilian series (taken from his site): " By 1977, my glass started to be exhibited in some galleries around the country. However, most of my glass finances were covered by selling wine goblets, tumblers and paperweights at art fairs, and working as a photographer. Continuing to be involved in clay, I returned to school and received an MFA in ceramics from the University of Arizona (1983). Around that time I had perfected a technique of design and form in glass that came to be called the "Reptilian" series. These pieces really got things happening. I was invited to Iceland to show and give lectures and workshops and later with my new partner, Bob Carlson, to Germany to produce work for a solo exhibition (1985) and for some Museum collections. Shortly thereafter, we dissolved our partnership and since that time operated Philabaum Studios in a remodeled and expanded former Tastee-Freeze restaurant in downtown Tucson." There is much more information on his page about the artist and his background. Thank you for viewing this item and please check out my other listings.
