FORMAT Paperback LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description "Effectively sharing mindfulness with teenagers depends on distinct skill sets . . . done well, it is incredibly joyous." Matthew Brensilver, JoAnna Hardy and Oren Jay Sofer provide a powerful guide to help teachers master the essential competencies needed to successfully share mindfulness practices with teens and adolescents. Incorporating anecdotes from actual teaching, they blend the latest scientific research with innovative, original techniques for making the practices accessible and interesting to this age group. This text is an indispensable handbook for mindfulness instruction in its own right, and a robust companion volume for teachers using The Mindful Schools Curriculum for Adolescents. Author Biography Matthew Brensilver, MSW, PhD, is a member of the Teachers Council and Guiding Teachers Executive Committee at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He previously served as Program Director for Mindful Schools and for more than a decade, was a core teacher at Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society. He lectures at UCLAs Mindful Awareness Research Center about the intersections between mindfulness and mental health and teaches retreats nationally. Before committing to teaching meditation full-time, he spent years doing research on addiction pharmacotherapy at the UCLA Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine and is interested in the unfolding dialogue between meditation and science. JoAnna Hardy has been teaching meditation practices to young people since 2005. She teaches retreats, is on the Spirit Rock teachers council, and focuses her work on building multicultural community with a focus on social and racial justice issues. Oren Jay Sofer leads retreats and workshops on meditation and communication throughout the United States. A member of the Spirit Rock Teachers Council, he holds a degree in Comparative Religion from Columbia University and is a Certified Trainer of Nonviolent Communication and a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner for the healing of trauma. Review Teaching Mindfulness to Empower Adolescents is a gorgeous gift in learning how to raise a generation of empaths. I am so grateful for the lesson in building relationships, leaving space, and establishing personal relevance. As a parent and individual, I felt deep support and a renewed understanding in the most important teachings and practices a person can have. I particularly loved this books guidance on the reminder to make space to listen. Thank you to JoAnna Hardy, Matthew Brensilver, and Oren Jay Sofer for bringing such essential teaching to light.--Laura Dern, Actor and ProducerIn Teaching Mindfulness to Adolescents, the what (curriculum) is important, but not as important as the how (quality of the teachers presence and mindset). This book shows the way to give life to mindfulness teaching with authenticity, ethics, and integrity--always starting with, and coming back to, the teachers own personal mindfulness practice. I highly recommended it to all adults who wants to bring mindfulness to youth, and to all adults who care deeply about young people.--Dzung X.
