Description: Stony Point is a town in Rockland County, New York and is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. It is located north of the town of Haverstraw, east and and west of the Hudson Rivery. The name of the town is derived from a prominent projection into the Hudson River. The town of Stony Point was founded in 1865 from the northern part of the town of Haverstraw. During the American Revolution, the King’s Ferry in Stony Point linked New York and the southern colonies with New England and was an important river crossing for American troops and supplies during the Revolution. It was used many times by General George Washington’s Continental Army, and in 1781 Washington’s French allies used it on their way to the battle of Yorktown. The Stony Point Battlefield, just north of Stony Point, marks the July 16, 1779 “Battle of Stony Point” in which General “Mad” Anthony Wayne led 1,350 Continental army troops in a surprise attack just before midnight against the 544-man British garrison at Stony Point, but only held the fort for a few days. And according to the writer of this postcard, the house on this card is one of “Stony Point’s Revolutionary Relics”. It is called the “Treason House” in which John Andre, and Benedict Arnold met the night before they were captured on the other side of the river, near Tarryton. Doctor Thomas Smith was the owner of the “Treason House” in West Haverstraw that was occupied by a brother, Joshua Hett Smith, at the time that Benedict Arnold and Major John Andre planned their conspiracies during the American Revolution. Stony Point New York has a lot of history for a small town. In any event, the “Treason House” might be on this card, an UDB, postmarked 1906 at the Wall Street Station in New York. It is aged but generally in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
