Description: Stangl Fruit & Flowers Bowl Salad 10" Blue Pink Yellow White Engobe 1958-1974 Exquisite Decorative STANGL POTTERY 10" Round SALAD BOWL, FRUIT & FLOWERS pattern #4030 in CPOUPE Style #3774, Brown Outside w/Inside FRUIT & FLOWERS on WHITE Engobe, from Trenton, New Jersey, USA, 1958-1974 DESCRIPTION: This is a beautiful 10" open salad bowl decorated (hand painted) in the Fruit & Flowers pattern which was introduced in 1958 and produced until 1974. Fruit & Flowers w/Sgraffito (hand carving & hand painting) was designed by Kay Hackett and at the request of Ed Hawley expanded to the dinnerware line being produced in Style Shape #3774 Coupe. As is true with all hand painted items, they each display unique variations. Stangl's expertise was with engobes (white) and sgraffito (hand carving & hand painting). This bowl does have the hand carving and the pattern name is stamped on the back. CONDITION: The condition of this Stangl bowl is excellent, even though it is classified as used. This would make a great display piece or a functional bowl to use everyday. We can find only one small manufacturing defect and one very minor scuff mark damage. The1/4" scuff mark is on the very top of the rim and slightly impacted the brown color. It does not go through the color to the pottery. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, scratches, rubbings or hairlines. Minor and common variations are evident in all hand painted items. The paint on the yellow fruit has 3 tiny bubbles on the brown paint. (See photo #7.) Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this is. DIMENSIONS: The bowl has a height of 2 7/8". The maximum width is 10". This is a study piece as it is quite heavy weighting 42.0 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: The Hill Pottery Company was founded by Samuel Hill in 1814, in Flemington, New Jersey. Hill Pottery produced utilitarian items. When Samuel Hill, died the company was purchased in 1858 by Abram Fulper, a former employee. He renamed the company The Fulper Pottery Company. Under Fulper's guidance, the company extended their line to include stoneware articles and tile. By the early 1900’s Fulper Pottery, run by William Hill Fulper II, began experimentation with art pottery. In 1910 Fulper Pottery hired Johan Martin Stangl as a ceramic chemist and technical assistant even though he was only 22 at the time. Martin Stangl was soon promoted to superintendent with total control of the plant employees including the foremen. Stangl left Fulper in 1914 and began working for Haeger Brick and Tile Company, but in 1918 he returned to Fulper and became Vice President. In 1926 Stangl was promoted to President. As president Stangl created the Fulper/Stangl logo. Upon William Fulper's death in 1928, Martin Stangl bought William Fulper's share of the Fulper Pottery Company and changed the Fulper/Stangl brand names and logos to the Stangl trademark. A major fire in 1929 destroyed plant #1 prompting the movement of the Stangl dinnerware production to the previously acquired Anchor Pottery plant in Trenton, NJ which is 23 miles south of Flemington. In October 1941, Kay Hackett was hired as a dinnerware designer. Her expertise was with engobes (white) and sgraffito (hand carving & hand painting). Prior to 1952, white engobe was hand applied. By 1950, a process to spray the engobe was developed to reduce labor costs. In 1952, a green engobe spray was introduced & used on the Thistle, Star Flower and Magnolia patterns, all of which became extremely popular. After Martin Stangl’s death in February 1972, Stangl Pottery was bought by Frank Wheaton and declined until its close in November 1978. Source for this is Robert C. Runge, Jr.’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Stangl Dinnerware. Fruit & Flowers was produced 1958-1974. The sandblasted oval Stangl mark was used 1953-1978. Martin Stangl marked 1st quality ware as second quality to be sold at his Flemington, New Jersey outlet because he could get more money selling seconds at discounted prices than he could by selling first quality to department stores at wholesale prices.
