Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) ST. IVES. The bay of St. Ives is one of the finest in Europe, and from the perpendicular sides of many tiny coves in the neighbourhood fish may be seen swimming about many feet below the surface. St. Ives is an ancient port, and one of the headquarters of the pilchard fishery; only a few years back it was a weatherbeaten place of steep and narrow streets, pervaded by the smell of drying fish, which were nailed out flat on the walls. On the promontory in the distance, called The Island, the visitor will still see the entire hill covered by acres and acres of nets spread out to dry in the sun, amongst which he can scarce make his way to the Battery at the top; but the place has now become quite a fashionable resort. The climate is delicious, yet bracing. The old church and cross date from about 1420, and are close to the harbour.
