Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Spain, Original, Vintage Silver Order of Military Merit without ribbon Silvered, die-stamped, non-ferrous metal pebbled Greek cross with integral crown suspension. This one measures 27 x 38 mm. In the center is the Spanish Coat of Arms with a fluer de lys. The marriage of Queen Isabel of Castile and King Ferdinand of Leon resulted in a coat of arms depicting the symbols of both kingdoms (two castles and two lions). After the Bourbons prevailed in the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714), the French fluer de lys was added to the Coat of Arms. The Order was created by Queen Isabel II on August 3, 1864 to be awarded for military merit. The Order has been revised on many occasions (1931, 1936, 1942, 1970, 1977, 1995, 2003). It is awarded for acts of bravery, distinction, service or merit by members of the Armed Forces, or civilians in support of the military. These crosses were often issued "in the field" and were replaced later by the nicer example. From my personal collection.
