(April 11, 1862 – August 27, 1948) was an American statesman, politician and jurist who served as the 11th Chief Justice of the United States from 1930 to 1941, appointed by Herbert Hoover. A member of the Republican Party, he was previously the 36th governor of New York and an associate justice of the Supreme Court. He also served as secretary of state. He was nominated in the 1916 presidential election but lost narrowly to Woodrow Wilson. Hughes also served as Warren Harding’s secretary of state.
