The obverse of this coin carries the inscription EX A PV which stands for Ex Argento Publico. Coins bearing this mark were struck on bullion taken from Rome's public treasury in times of desperation. In 102 BCE, Gaius Marius marched his army of six legions into southern Gaul to confront the Teutones. By then, the Cimbri had returned to Gaul and the two tribes decided to invade Italy from separate directions – the Teutones along the Mediterranean coast, and the Cimbri through the Alps. Marius deciecively defeated the Teutones at the Battle of Aquae Sextiae followed by a devestating victory over the Cimbri at the Battle of Vercellae in 101 BCE. This coin was specifically struck to pay for the legionaries serving in Marius' reformed army. Various members of the gens Fabia, a prominent Roman patrician family, became famous for obtaining multiple consecutive consulships during the early republican period. The Fabii claimed descent from both Hercules and Evander. Individuals also distinguished themselves as military leaders, scholars and artists. The moneyer, quaestor C. Fabius Hadrianus, was probably related to the infamous Fabius Hadrianus, praetor in 84 BC in the Roman province Africa. Comes with old dealer envelope.
