Description: SIEGE OF CHARLESTON. Historically important Revolutionary War-dated autograph letter signed by, “William Allen,” providing intelligence on the movement by sea of thousands of British soldiers to aid in the Siege of Charleston: “By intelligence from New York we learn that an embarkation of 4,000 Troops is going on with a possible expedition, their Destination unknown, tho they have Given out that they are Bound to South Carolina.” HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT REVOLUTIONARY WAR-DATED AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY LOYALIST WILLIAM ALLEN PROVIDING INTELLIGENCE ON THE SIEGE OF CHARLESTON The Siege of Charleston was fought from March 29 to May 12, 1780 between British troops led by General Henry Clinton and American troops led by General Benjamin Lincoln. It was an important British victory that initiated their southern campaign to retake the colonies from the bottom up and represented one of the worst American defeats of the war. “BY INTELLIGENCE FROM NEW YORK WE LEARN THAT AN EMBARKATION OF 4,000 TROOPS IS GOING ON WITH A POSSIBLE EXPEDITION, THEIR DESTINATION UNKNOWN, THO THEY HAVE GIVEN OUT THAT THEY ARE BOUND TO SOUTH CAROLINA William Allen (1704-1780) was a well-known merchant and attorney who served as the Chief Justice of the Province of Pennsylvania and Mayor of Philadelphia. During the American Revolution, he was a Loyalist and the wealthiest man in Philadelphia. Allen would die in his Philadelphia home only five months after sending this letter. ALLEN WAS WELL-KNOWN FOR SERVING AS THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE PROVINCE OF PENNSYLVANIA AND MAYOR OF PHILADELPHIA Sent to the famous ship owner and slave trader Cyprian Sterry, contains one page, measures 10 by 7 inches, created in Morris-Town, New Jersey on April 4, 1780, and in very good condition with toning and minor staining.
