According to some sources, inspiration for the Bolero came from a painting of dancers by Goya. Others, disgruntled critics all, claim that the work is devoid of inspiration and must be regarded merely as an orchestral tour de force. Just before the first performance Ravel himself warned that he had indulged in a special, limited experiment of seventeen minutes' duration: "orchestral tissue without music" consisting entirely of a long gradual crescendo. The result is eighteen virtually exact repetitions of a folk-like theme of Spanish-Arabic origin, using each
