What's more, both the above words and the music are proof-positive that, when it comes to great music, Maurice Ravel's heart was always in the right place! Boléro-wise, it all began with that celebrated lady dancer, Ida Rubinstein. In 1928, she asked Maurice to write her a little something Spanish-style and he accepted - con mucho gusto. According to some sources, inspiration for the Bolero came from a painting of dancers by Goya. Others, disgruntled critics all, claim that the work is devoid of inspiration and must be regarded merely as an orchestral tour de force. Just before the first performance Ravel himself warned that he had indulged in a special, limited experiment of seventeen minutes' duration: "orchestral tissue without music" consisting entirely of a long gradual crescendo.
