Description: This neat painted redware penny bank is a rare find for collectors. With its mellow yellow-green color (why not orange?) and textured surface, it's a fine folk art approach to citrus fruit. The bank is probably from either Pennsylvania or Ohio. Likely made during the Civil War era, circa 1860s. But these vernacular item could have been made a generation later. This penny bank or money box is a cast redware piece, made of two pieces, top & bottom. These were put together around the waist with slip. The final touch was the painting, in this case a surprising yellow-green enamel. Condition is fine with lots of wear and aged patina. 3.1” High 3.4” Diameter (at the waist’s seam)
