Description: This beautiful and delicate porcelain lidded trinket dish was made by Haviland & Company, Limoges, France (see last photo for markings found on bottom). I could find no other example of this online either the shape or bird design which suggests this is a rare collectible. The age is unknown, but based on the style and other found information about the Haviland/Limoges company, this may be from the later 1800s during the Victorian period. This box features a hand painted design of multicolored birds in flight on a sky blue background. The edges and sides of the box have a spatter gold detail on an ivory background. The finish is a high gloss. The shape of this box is unique. The lid has a raised design around it's edges. This trinket box is in very nice condition for it's age with no chips, cracking, crazing, or discoloration on the outsides. It's difficult to know whether the gold edges are meant to have the spatter look or are missing some detail since I can find no other example of this to compare it to. But there is no flaking or peeling evident. The inside of the box is clean and smooth. The underside of the lid and the top edge of the box do show some minor scuffing and dark marks from where it likely rubbed together during storage or use. The bottom has some marks where it would have sat on a shelf. None of these things affect it's display quality since they are not seen when displayed. The box is 2½" long and 2" wide. It is 1" tall without the lid, and 1½" tall with the lid. This is a lovely piece to display in a classic, formal, or Victorian decor, or a pretty piece for a bird lover to use to hold small mementos.
