Description: Purge Box Argon Backing TIG Welding Aluminum 6061. Condition is "New". Purge block for use in welding stainless, nickel alloys and other metals where you are trying to eliminate oxidation from welding using an argon flow on the back side of the weldment. Block is made in two halves from 6061 aluminum and is 6" long by 3" wide with a total thickness of 1 3/8". Designed and made in the USA. Comes with 1/4" ID tubing that is 10' long along with a argon fitting that works with most argon flow regulators. Not recommended to weld directly on the surface unless you are not going for full penetration. If you are going for a full penetration weld then block up the weldment from the purge block leaving a gap between the purge block and weldment. Testing was done at different heights from the top of the purge block. 2-4 CFH was used at a distance from flush to 1/4" away from block and that allowed good backing coverage. 1/4"- 3/8" away from block the flow setting needed to be 8-10 CFH. 1/2" away need over 15 CFH. These numbers will vary a lot based on many different factors. This block was designed with long term use in mind. The top section where the holes go through the top plate is over .300" thick(top plate at the sides is 3/4" thick). Once the top plate starts getting worn down and damaged from use you can simply take the top plate off and sand or mill it down to good condition. This block also uses a 2 part diffuser method. First is built inside the box and the second is the grid pattern of small holes giving a nice even flow over the surface. Calipers in the pictures are not included and used as a size reference.
