Description: ORIGINAL PRE-CIVIL WAR MILITIA WOODEN BOX FRAME KNAPSACK. Wooden frame covered with waterproof canvas. Measures 15" high by 13.5" wide by 4" wide. These type knapsacks typically have few if any straps remaining, and this one is no exception. Still retains one short strap with buckle at bottom, and one complete blanket strap at top. Two other short straps with buckles and another piece of strap are loose inside the knapsack. Knapsack has three numbers stenciled in white paint: "29" on front flap; "23" on back; and "32" on one side ("32"). I assume that the first two are unit numbers, and the last is an individual soldier number. These markings are almost certainly post-Civil War. These type knapsacks saw use by many post-Civil War militia units (e.g., "separate companies" of the New York State Militia). Knapsack shows age and wear, with small tears and missing pieces. However, front flap is complete and pliable, and knapsack still displays well. Please inspect photos carefully for condition.
