Description: Partisan Life with Col. John S. Mosby by Major John Scott. Harper & Brothers, New York, 6 by 9 1/2 inches, 492 pages. Written in the form of letters, these are post war memoirs of the military career of Confederate partisan Colonel John S, Mosby of the 43rd Battalion, Virginia Cavalry of the Confederacy or Mosby's Rangers. It was written by a member of the Rangers. Mosby, often called the Gray Ghost, was known by his successful surprise raids and the ability to escape capture and disappear. A colorful character, his exploits were romanticized in a 1950's television series. The book has a fold out map and a number of wood engravings, many full page. This was a popular book early on, and I've seen the binding in a number of colors - I'm not sure what printing this is - the date is given as 1867 on the title page and verso. The book is complete but only in fair shape. A former owner rebound the book red tape, and the green boards are worn. The front flyleaf is missing and several signatures are loose or apart from the book. The last plate has tape at the bottom, and the back endpaper and inside cover are creased and worn, and hough held by the red tape, the book is cracking at the gutter.
