Description: Portrait of Giulia Grisi as Elvira I Puritani 1846 by Lady Augusta Sarah Cadogan Watercolor Portrait of Famous 19th Century Soprano, Giulia Grisi as Elvira in Performance of I Puritani by Vincenzo Bellini in 1846 London Opera, painted by Lady Augusta Sarah Cadogan This is an original antique portrait of Giulia Grisi as Elvira in Performance of I Puritani by VIncenzo Bellini, and dated 1846, London. This portriat was painted by Lady Augusta Sarah Cadogan, Lady in Waiting to Duchess of Cambridge. I Puritani by Vincenzo Bellini was Queen Victoria's favorite Opera. This opera was originally performed in London for Queen Victoria in 1835, but it was performed numerous times in London after that, and it was definitely performed in London in 1846, the date of this watercolor. The style of the watercolor is in the same style as the other portraits by Lady Augusta Sarah Cadogan that are currently in the UK's Royal Trust Collection, similarly signed, dated and with several inscriptions in the artist's hand. I was able to make out the following inscriptions and signatures: " A. S. Cadogan / 1846" " XXXXXillegible" "Giulella Grisi / Elvira I Puritani". There are also several annotations and inscriptions in pencil in another hand, possibly later as to identify drawing " Augusta Sarah Cadogan (D. 1882) Daughter of George (illeg) Earl of Cadogan, Lady in Waiting to H.R. H. Duchess of Cambridge" Giulia Grisi (1811-1869) Italian opera singer. Also known as Juliette de Candia, styled in her married last name; usually better known by the courtesy title the Marquesse of Candia. She performed widely in Europe, the United States and South America and was among the leading sopranos of the 19th century. Lady Augusta Sarah Cadogan, (1812-1882) whose primary collection of drawings and watercolors are located in the British Collection Trust as part of the Royal Collection. She was a Lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Cambridge; daughter of 3rd Earl of Cadogan, and she was an accomplished artist of portraiture and of keeping historical records of many of the social activities of Queen Victoria's court. Provenance: purchased from a UK collection Condition: Very good condition. A few minor scuffs and stains. At top border, there is old remnants of glue/tape. Pasted on to another paper, but done by original artist, as the inscriptions on both papers are in the same hand.
