You can see a bit of the aluminum exposed where the cellulose nitrate lacquer has flaked off at the edge of side two (Photo #5). Can hear scratching noise when played as expected given the age of this recording. Record Size: 8 inches edge to edge. Description: This original recording is 80 years old!! Just an astonishing piece of history that absolutely gave us chills as we listened to the voice of President Franklin Roosevelt as he sat in front of a microphone at 9:57pm on D-Day, June 6, 1944 after the Normandy Invasion had already been launched. He was in the Diplomatic Reception Room at the White House waiting to begin a national radio address. President Roosevelt's address took the form of a prayer. He had composed it the weekend before the invasion with assistance from his daughter, Anna, and her husband, John Boettiger. An advanced text was released early so Americans could recite it with him. President Roosevelts "D-Day Prayer" struck a powerful cord with the nation. It appears to be an original home recording that someone had the foresight to record on the day history was taking place and a turning point in World War II. We played this on our Victrola a few lines above 78 speed. It's not crystal clear, but, you can hear his words.
