Print - ~27.5" x 39" tallProfessionally framed in solid black frame with rich textured (linen/silk) matting: Framed in simple Dims - ~37.5" x 49"H Jim Dine (b. 1935) was one of the original artists that defined Pop Art in the 1960s and redirected American art away from abstraction by including depictions of objects and items from daily life. Like Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, Dine embraces quintessential American images and icons. He uses recognizable forms as the basis for bold and colorful compositions that flirt with abstraction. Pinnochio is among the most frequented subject matter in Dine’s oeuvre, often using the character as a portal for self-discovery. His fascination dates back to the first time he watched the Disney classic in 1941 when he was only 6 years old. Inspired by The Adventures of Pinocchio: Story of a Puppet, a series of short stories written in 1881 by Italian writer and journalist Carlo Collodi, they are unlike the family-friendly Disney rendition, the serial presents tales that are much darker. Pinocchio breaks numerous promises to be good to his father, has money stolen from him, and even eludes several attempts on his life. Of his fascination with Pinocchio, who first appeared in his prints in 1998, Dine writes: “Thanks to Carlo Collodi, the real creator of Pinocchio, I have for many years been able to live thru the wooden boy…His poor burned feet, his misguided judgment, his vanity about his large nose, his temporary donkey ears all add up to the real sum of his parts. In the end it is his great heart that holds me.” Dine perceives that “this idea of a talking stick becoming a boy, it’s like a metaphor for art, and it’s the ultimate alchemical transformation.” His Geppetto is a self-portrait, alluding to the artist as creator, who in giving life has a connection with the Divine.
