Description: All original Arnold Hoyer Archtop Guitar - Tuxedo Black First Herr im Frack series (1948-1954) RARE, Collectible, and Playable. HISTORY: The Herr im Frack ("Gentleman in Tailcoat") series was produced by Arnold Hoyer in Erlangen, Germany after WWII until the late 1950s as a high-end professional jazz guitar. The most common model had both the traditional F-holes and a silly-looking center round hole that is unappealing today. Some were signed "Herr Im Frack" and some were not. This one, the rarer model, has no round sound hole, only F-holes, giving it enduring appeal and a classical look. The black and white Tailcoat Tuxedo design is complemented by a red band marker on the 12th fret representing the cummerbund waist band. The cool HEADSTOCK with the two white stripes representing the tuxedo shirt is one of the most unique and attractive features of this model. This is NOT to be confused with the imitation model called the "Lindberg." The Lindberg was produced by Rodebald Hoyer, no relation to Arnold Hoyer. Hoyer was a common name in Egerland, Bohemia, a luthier region. In 1945, many were forced to relocate to Erlangen, Bavaria, were they set up shop. The Hoyer Guitars brand started in 1874 with Franz Hoyer, followed by his son Joseph and his grandson Arnold. See hoyerguitars.com 'History' tab. It says these models "are now collectors items with cult status." DATING: I have included two pictures of the Hoyer 1948 first catalogue. Notice the headstock style already present. This guitar could be as early as their first brochure, 1948, or even 1945 when Arnold Hoyer reestablished the Hoyer shop near Erlangen. The fully signed tailpiece is very early, and the old Hoyer logo decal changed to the "star" design logo after 1954. CONDITION: Exceptional for a 70 to 75 year old instrument. It is intact with no repairs that I can detect. Nicks and scratches are fairly few for its age and hardly visible. See high-definition closeup pictures. The wooden pick guard is slightly warped at the tail end, but not enough to warrant steam flattening. Small chip hard to notice on the bridge-to-pickguard pin can be filled, but does not affect playability or any buzz. The pick guard is tightly fastened. The NECK is straight with LOW ACTION. Jumbo frets in excellent condition. It has a "0 fret" by the nut and metal saddle. This gives it bright highs and mid, while the acoustics of the bass design and the solid carved spruce soundboard give it a deep bass. To listen to this signature Hoyer sound, go to you tube and write "Hoyer schlaggitarre Jan Haasler" for acoustic and "Arnold Hoyer lawman guitars" for electric with pickup added. Lower bout 16-1/2 inches; Upper bout 12 in.; Depth 3-1/2 in.; overall length 42 in. Well packed with strings loosened. See my other guitars and parts. Thank you for looking!
