ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is a Beautiful & Extremely Rare Vintage Mid Century 1943 ‘Smaller Version’ WWII Halftone Poster (Not a more-modern reproduction) from the famous ‘Four Freedoms’ Series of Paintings titled, “Freedom From Want”, after the original 1942 painting by the world famous listed painter & illustrator, ‘Norman Rockwell’ (American, 1894-1978), whose printed signature appears lower left in the image area and was featured on the March 6, 1943 cover of Saturday Evening Post. We currently have one other smaller poster version of “Freedom from Fear”, as well as some of Rockwell’s rare WWII “Freedom Series” War Bonds Posters available, so please have a look! About the “Four Freedoms” Series: Rockwell’s series of four paintings were inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s famous “Four Freedoms” speech at the State of the Union Address made to Congress on January 6, 1941, on the eve of World War II. Norman Rockwell wanted to contribute to the war effort by creating paintings that depicted each one of the ‘Freedoms’ mentioned. With completed charcoal sketches, Rockwell boarded a train bound for Washington, D.C., to visit the government’s propaganda department, the Office of War Information (OWI), proposing that the illustrations be made into patriotic posters that could be sold to raise funds for the war effort. He was quoted as saying, “I showed the Four Freedoms to the man in charge of posters,” Rockwell said, “but he wasn’t even interested.” Discouraged, Rockwell on his way back to Vermont, stopped in Philadelphia to discuss future projects with the Saturday Evening Post editor Ben Hibbs. In passing, Rockwell mentioned his Washington trip, explained what the series was about, and then showed him the sketches. Hibbs loved the idea, telling the artist, “Norman, you’ve got to do them for us. … Drop everything else, just do the Four Freedoms.” Rockwell spent seven months painting the Four Freedoms, which were published in four consecutive issues of the Post, starting on February 20, 1943, accompanied by essays from four distinguished writers to include: Booth Tarkington, Will Durant, Carlos Bulosan, and Stephen Vincent Benet. The paintings were a phenomenal success, and the Post received 25,000 reprint requests. A few months later, the government changed its tune and in May, 1943, the Post and the U.S. Treasury Department launched a joint fundraising campaign for the war sending Rockwell’s four paintings as well as over 1,000 original The Saturday Evening Post paintings, sketches and cartoons by other illustrators and original manuscripts on a 16-city national exhibition tour. Millions of full-color reproductions of Rockwell’s “Four Freedoms” were authorized and printed for the exhibition and each purchaser of War Bonds or War Stamps of $1 or more, received a free set of the four ‘small format’ reproductions (with envelope) which were suitable for framing (they were smaller poster reproductions than the 3 larger ‘various-sized’ war bond posters subsequently issued [28” x 20”, 40” x 28” & 56” x 40”]) and Rockwell himself was in attendance at an early showing where he signed many of the ‘small format’ poster reproductions for the public—the small format size was the same size as our poster listed [with margins & no fold-lines like the larger versions] and were, I believe, the first reproduction posters made after Rockwell’s paintings, before the 3 larger War Bond Posters were subsequently printed. More than one million people attended the traveling exhibition that raised an astounding $132 million to help with the war effort (over $2 Billion in today’s dollar for 2021) and in addition, 70 pieces of the Saturday Evening Post originals were awarded on a competitive basis. (Source: saturdayeveningpost, article, “Rockwell’s Four Freedoms: 75 years ago, the painter transformed abstract ideas into concrete images that helped galvanize a nation.”, by Patrick Perry, featured in the January/February 2018 issue of The Saturday Evening Post; fultonhistory, newspaper article from the Rochester Times-Union (Rochester, NY), “City Picked to See 4 Freedoms Bond Show”, Friday, July 9, 1943; and prints.nrm) Publisher & Poster Info: Though not printed on the piece, the Print was published under the auspices of the Office of War Information, Washington, DC (OWI, as were the others in the series) in association with the Saturday Evening Post, as a free giveaway to purchasers of War Bonds or War Stamps of $1 or more. The title appears printed lower middle in the bottom outer margin area in script, “Freedom from Want”, and the artist & magazine info, ‘Painted by Norman Rockwell for the Saturday Evening Post’, appears printed in small text lower right respectively just under the image. The Poster is on a light weight smooth coated ivory-colored wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The size with small margins is 16-1/4” x 12-3/4”, Image size is 13-13/16” x 10-3/4”. The Poster is in VeryGood-Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with fresh color & tones, and no real or discernable color fade at all (unlike others sold previously at auction or online). Our Poster is as good as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. The piece was previously matted (tipped at corners to a backing stock with flip-front mat) at one point in preparation for framing, but was never framed and is being sold loose, and there is extremely minimal & slight exposure toning of the stock from being previously matted but can easily be matted out again. There is a tiny bit of older framer’s tape on the top outer margin corners from being tipped. Only one ultra-tiny & completely negligible 1/4” outer margin edge tear on the left edge lower-middle, which is repaired from behind with archival tape for protection, and is negligible since the outer margins can easily be matted & framed out. Minimal & slight tiny crescent-creasing scattered here & there in the image area which aren’t even really noticeable (except from behind) and aren’t worth mentioning really. Other minimal & slight small creases here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edges, as well as some small dog-ear bends in a few outer margin corners and extremely minimal outer margin edge wear with a few tiny dents & dings here & there—most outer margin issues are also negligible and easily matted & framed out. Extremely minimal (only a handful or so) of very tiny & faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are hardly noticeable and not even really worth mentioning either. Other slight normal toning of the stock from age. Extremely minimal surface wear with a handful of small surface scuffs here & there in the image area which certainly don’t detract from the piece at all. This beautiful & extremely rare vintage mid century poster has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade and will make a wonderful addition to any Norman Rockwell, WWII/U.S. military history or art collection. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!
