Brass dampens the vibration that comes through the Capstan motor transport. A huge benefit. Even though brass changes color if not plated, you can take a piece of sandpaper and make it look new. The change is only superficial. Aluminum corrodes faster, bubbles and becomes a white powder which can't easily be restored. The oxide goes deep into the surface with aluminum, unlike the brass. The reason many of the manufacturers don't use brass is that it's very expensive, 4x to 5x more expensive.
