Description: MEDINA SPIRIT 2021 KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER HORSE JOHN VELAZQUEZ UP 8X10 PHOTO. THIS IS AN 8 INCH X 10 INCH GLOSSY PHOTO. Medina Spirit (foaled April 5, 2018) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse which qualified for the Kentucky Derby winning the Robert B. Lewis Stakes and finishing second in both the San Felipe Stakes and Santa Anita Derby. He was ridden by jockey John Velazquez in his fourth Derby triumph and trained by Bob Baffert in his record seventh Derby victory. The horse was a long shot with consensus odds at 12–1 Medina Spirit is a dark bay colt bred in Florida by Gail Rice. He is from the first crop of multiple graded stakes winner Protonico, who stands at Castleton Farm. Protonico is by Giant's Causeway, who was a multiple Group I winner in Europe, nicknamed the Iron Horse. Giant's Causeway was later a leading sire in North America. Medina Spirit was the first foal produced by Mongolian Changa, a daughter of Brilliant Speed who won one of six starts. Medina Spirit attracted little attention when he was entered in the Ocala Breeders Sale of January 2019. He was sold for the minimum $1,000 (meaning he only received a single bid) to Christy Whitman, who later resold the colt to bloodstock agent Gary Young who purchased it for $35,000 for Amr Zedan at the Ocala July Two-Year-Old Sale. Zedan had been interested in the colt in part because one of his friends, Oussama Aboughazale, had owned Protonico. Zedan named the horse for Medina, the second holiest city in Islam after Mecca and also the capital of the Medina Province of Saudi Arabia. Medina is the hometown of both Zedan and Aboughazale. Medina Spirit was surprising his trainers by outworking the more expensive colts that Baffert's stable is known to attract. "He reminded me of Silver Charm", said Baffert, referring to his first Derby winner from 1997. "He doesn't know how much he cost. To determine a horse's true nature from genetics, one has to go back to 1961. The two charts below show the pedigree of both Prontico and Mongolian Changa. We see Northern Dancer, Secretariat, Seattle Slew and AP Indy to name a few in the bloodline of Prontico. For Mongolian Changa we see Holy Bull, Mr. Prospector, Forty Niner, and Unbridled. Medina Spirit’s dam, Mongolian Changa, is by Brilliant Speed, a stallion vaguely like Protonico in that he was a millionaire on the racetrack but not commercially appealing at stud. By Dynaformer – the sire of 2006 Kentucky Derby legend Barbaro – Brilliant Speed spent most of his career on the grass and placed third to St Nicholas Abbey in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1). Earlier in that sophomore season, Brilliant Speed dabbled on the Triple Crown trail, prevailing in the Blue Grass (G1) on Keeneland’s old Polytrack and taking third in the Belmont. .Photo will be mailed in high quality photo mailer.
