The original rail ancestor of the B&LE, the Shenango and Allegheny Railroad, began operation in October 1869. Andrew Carnegiehad been discussing rail transport with other lines, but determined the best way to protect his interests was to control the rail line himself. Several smaller companies had constructed sections of the route. "Bear Creek Railroad (name changed to Shenango and Allegheny Railroad Co.) was incorporated in March 1865 for the purpose of moving coal 21 miles from Pardoe to Shenango for delivery to other railroads and the Erie Extension Canal. By 1883, Shenango and Allegheny had extended north to Greenville Pennsylvania, and south to Butler Pennsylvania. By 1892, the line had extended north to reach the port of Conneaut, Ohio. The extensions carried their own descriptive corporate names and survived a series of corporate reorganizations to become the Pittsburgh, Shenango and Lake Erie." The rail line had been completed as far as Butler, still 40 miles distant from the Mon Valley. The first ore boat arrived in Conneaut in 1892 stimulating the interest of Andrew Carnegie. In April 1896, a tri-party agreement between PS&LE, Union Railroad Company and Carnegie Steel Company called for construction of a line from Butler to East Pittsburgh. The Butler and Pittsburgh Railroad Company incorporated April 8, 1896 and completed, spectacularly, by October 27, 1897 including a long, single track bridge across the Allegheny River. Also in 1897, PS&LE and B&P were consolidated into the Pittsburgh, Bessemer & Lake Erie under majority ownership of Carnegie. The Union Railroad or as some call "railroad in the sky" was created 1896. The railroad, as it exists today, has resulted from the union of five different railroads between the years 1906 and 1915. The original URR extended from East Pittsburgh to Hays, a distance of six miles, and was constructed in the years 1894–1907. Marx made five different type of couplers between 1934 and 1974. If you’ve never seen Marx couplers explained before, here’s a primer on how to identify them and use them together. And I even have a few repair tips if you need them. You’ll see tab and slot couplers more often than any other type. Some people also call them hook and slot couplers, or simply hook couplers. Marx introduced this style of coupler in 1936 and continued to use it until the end in 1974, although Marx relegated it to locomotive-to-tender connections after 1972. Marx may or may not have used it longer than anyone else, but they were the last of the big-name train manufacturers to stop using it in the United States. It wasn’t very realistic, but it was inexpensive and effective. It’s also compatible with a number of other coupler types, so a Marx car outfitted with these couplers makes a useful transition car so you can run more than one type together. Marx had some variants on this design. Cars intended for electric train sets had their couplers attached via a brass eyelet. Cars intended for clockwork-powered train sets had their couplers attached via tabs or a dimple that allowed them to slide. Clockwork locomotives like some slack in the couplers, as it makes it easier to get the train started. Electric sets work better without that much slack. The small amount of slack you get from fixed couplers is adequate for electric sets. The tilt - fork coupler dates to 1942. Marx kept making it all the way to the end of its train production, in 1974. It was Marx’s top of the line coupler. All of the train makers wanted a coupler design that could automatically couple or uncouple so as to improve play value. The tilt - fork coupler was Mars's second and more successful effort. The tilt-fork couplers will automatically mate by running the cars into each other, as long as their height is close. It’s a good idea to check your metal tilt couplers’ height against a plastic tilt coupler for smoother running. You can adjust the height slightly by gently bending the coupler up or down.Later tilt couplers made of plastic had a slot in them to make them compatible with tab and slot couplers. When Jim and Debby Flynn licensed the name Marx Trains and started producing trains in the old Marx style, they included a slot in their metal coupler. Some hobbyists cut a slot in their metal couplers with a Dremel cut-off wheel so they can attach a tab and slot coupler to them. A small cut at the back of the existing opening suffices. ** SiliconeUnderground - Dave Farquhar 1928-30 Joy Line early thin lithoed tinplate loop1930-34 Marx Joy Line loop type thicker raw metal1935-36 Marx thick loop type Joy Line 6 inch silver litho over black base1934-35 Talgo pin coupler on 2 wheel M100001934-36 Talgo pin coupler on 4 wheel M100001936-50 Talgo pin coupler on M10005 passenger1938-48 Talgo pin on Mercury articulated passenger 1936 to end of 1948??1936 to end of 1974 Six inch 4 wheel Riveted Tab & Slot1936 Riveted Tab and slot 6 inch silver litho on black base1937 One way auto coupler for 8 wheel 6 inch cars with male post die cast and red base1937-38 Tab and slot 6 inch white lithography on red base electric1938-42 One way auto coupler for 8 wheel 6 inch cars with male post die cast - 1941 stamped steel post1938-42 Riveted tab and slot for six inch 8 wheel cars1938-48 Sliding twisted Tab & Slot for clockwork 6 inch1948-74 Sliding punched Tab & Slot for clockwork 6 inch1939-40 Sliding twisted Tab & Slot for clockwork silver zinc or tinplate 6 inch base1941-53 Twist type fork metal auto coupler for 3/16 scale cars - 1941 vertical slot on coupler1949-51 Short metal fork auto coupler cars with taller D trucks1948-49 Rectangular loop and hook on Canadian 198 powered 6 inch plastic passenger1950-57 Riveted tab and slot or knuckle, 7 inch cars1962-70 Riveted tab and slot or knuckle, 7 inch old time passenger cars1953-1974 Twist type fork Plastic auto couplers on tin 3/16 and plastic 027 with added slot that allowed Tab & Slot Couplers to mate1953 to 1974 Plastic Fixed Knuckle Coupler and continued by PlastiMarx - Thanks to - Dan Schievelbein Note #1: I will combine shipping for multiple items.
