Description: Offered for your consideration is a lot of two (2) vintage Dur-O-Lite propelling mechanical lead pencils, USA-manufactured c.1953. These two pencils have cream-colored barrels with chrome-plated steel clips and writing cones. They’re both promotional or ad pencils—something Dur-O-Lite was well-known for—and the one with burgundy eraser cap/finger section is marked National Gas & Oil Co. while the other has a black eraser cap/finger section and was made for the Typewriter and Office Machine Co. The stylish “necktie” clip that they both sport would be simplified, cheapened really, into a conventional straight design by 1955. Please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if these two interesting Dur-O-Lite pencils should be yours. These two Dur-O-Lite pencils are in clean, very good condition. They both measure 5 5/16” long by a hand-filling 7/16” thick. There are no cracks or noteworthy scratches to the barrels, just age-darkening making the cream plastic closer to tan, and some light, typical use and storage marks from the years as pictured. Plus, the metal parts have no oxidation or tarnish, good shine, and the clips rest firmly against the barrels with no gap. Also, the promo graphics on both are in nice shape with no enamel loss noted. Overall, these old Dur-O-Lite pencils present quite well. Most importantly, both of the pencils work perfectly. They use .046” (1.1mm) lead in their simple and dependable spiral mechanisms. Rotation of the writing cone extends the lead and retraction, when needed, is accomplished by a gentle upward push. Plus, both original erasers are present and they still feel rubbery, pliable, but are likely no longer fully effective and should probably be replaced. And, there’s a small supply of leads underneath the eraser cradles as typical. Lastly, these vintage Dur-O-Lite pencils are well-balanced with good mass and feel great on paper, especially with the large, soft lead of yesteryear that many of us still prefer! So, as pictured and described, this lot of two Dur-O-Lite promotional pencils is offered at a competitive price.
