For the rest of you......These bare root Shagbark Hickory Nut Tree Seedling are a perfect addition to your property, rural or in town. With an upright spreading crown, these trees will thrive in USA Ag zones 4-8, adapting to many soil types and requiring light watering when a young seedling like these. The Shagbark Hickory produces a delicious nut, loved by humans and wildlife alike, especially squirrels. These trees were born and raised in Wisconsin, so they are adapted to cold and heat. The mother tree is over 100 years old, from northeast Wisconsin and has withstood and flourished in winter temperatures of -35 F. and summer heat of over 100 F. We seed our nut trees in raised air beds. ( See pics please) These air prune beds raise the best transplant trees that can be found anywhere. How they work. When you plant most nut trees they immediately upon germination first send down a long tap root. Longer than most other trees. A Hickory tree will send a tap root down as much as 2-3 ft before the above ground stem is even 6-8". In a normal pot, even a tall pot at times, the tap root bottoms out in the pot because it's too long. Then begins to curl around the inside of the pot to keep growing, meanwhile only sending out a few lateral roots, and fibrous roots. The air prune beds we grow our nut trees in have wire mesh bottoms. So when the tap root hits air, it stops growing. Then what happens is the tree will grow more lateral roots for stability and more fibrous feeding roots off of those. When you transplant these trees they will have a compact very full root system. Once planted the tap root will sense soil, not air, and begin growing again! See the photo of the close-up of the roots. You can see the large dark tap root that developed the first year in the air pruned bed. Then it was planted in a tall pot and the tap root started growing again as pictured. We pulled it up to take a picture. The trees we send you will be very carefully dug up from our air prune beds at time of sale, carefully packaged, and sent to your way in a jiffy. You will be getting two trees with each order. Help us restore these amazing trees, as they have become a little rare! Get growing!
