Large original lithograph by Andre Masson "Orgie" 1970 w. COA

Description: Andre Masson (1896-1987) went through quite a few artistic transformations in his life. He was born in France and fell under the influence of cubism and then surrealism and then finally developed a style which inspired the abstract expressionists of the early 50's. He knew Picasso and Miro and, for awhile, adapted the technique of creating art while in an altered state of consciousness. His early artwork greatly was influenced by cubisn and Picasso's line drawings. He served in the French army in WWI and never fully recovered from exposure to the horrors of that war. Later one, eroticism became a trademark of his artistic output and just before WWII, several erotic drawings were seized by the Nazis and his work in general was condemned as degenerate. He lived in Spain during the Spanish civil war and he retired to Connecticut in the USA where his artwork served to inspire Jackson Pollock and other abstract expressionist painters. The artwork for sale is a large original lithograph from his series "Terre Erotiques" which featured sexual imagery. The lithograph for sale is # VIII from that series. The piece is entitled "Orgie" and depicts a menage de trois. The image is on a cream colored sheet of Arches paper and has a watermark. The piece measures 19" high by 26" wide. It is signed in pencil (photo 2) at the lower right. The total edition for this print was 125 but this image is from the estate of the artist and reads "EA" in pencil at the lower left (photo 3). A certificate of authenticity accompanies this original print (photo 4).
