Lagerstroemia indica shrub/small tree in the Lythraceae family. A native of Central Himalayas to Southern China and Indo-China. The genus name honors the Swedish botanist Magnus von Lagerstroemia. A multi-stemmed, deciduous tree with a wide-spreading look and flat-topped, rounded, or even spike-shaped. It is a popular nesting shrub for songbirds and wrens. In the UK, Lagerstroemia indica has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It can grow to 10 feet tall and spread out to 5 feet tall. The glossy oval leaves are highly ornamental and turn dark red in fall. The red flowers emerge on top of stems in bunches from mid-summer to early fall. Deer resistant and drought tolerant. It prefers full sun with well-drained soil. Zones 6-9 Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
