And On The 8th Day Paul Stanley ~ Guitar, Lead Vocals Gene Simmons ~ Bass, Vocals Vinnie Vincent ~ Lead Guitar Eric Carr ~ Drums ♦ Shortly after Kiss completed their Creatures of the Night tour in South America, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Carr and newest Kiss member Vinnie Vincent returned to the United States to write material for the band’s next album. Teamed once again with Creatures of the Night co-producer Michael James Jackson, Kiss entered Right Track Studios in New York City in July 1983. With renewed creativity not prevalent since Kiss’ early days, tracks such as “Young and Wasted,” “All Hell’s Breakin’ Loose,” and “Gimme More” revealed prime examples of classic Simmons and Stanley songwriting fused with Vincent’s fresh and fierce guitar technique. The result was Lick it Up - an album that would re-introduce Kiss to the next generation of music listeners with a new sound, and a new look. Founding members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley knew that a chapter in Kiss’ story was over. The band’s trademark make-up - which had helped launch the original Kiss toward international superstardom - had run its course. Collectively, the entire band knew it was time to drop Kiss’ kabuki- clad image of the 1970s and show the world a new, unmasked Kiss for the 1980s. After seeing photographs of themselves taken in a studio without makeup, Kiss was ready to face and conquer their biggest challenge ever: rebirth. On September 18, 1983, Kiss appeared unmasked for the first time on Music Television (MTV). Subsequently, Lick It Up was released without a trace of Kiss’ outrageous costumes and clown-white faces. Initially, the band was not quite sure how long-time fans would react. They had undergone so many changes over the past few years (losing original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, disappointing album sales on Unmasked, Music From The Elder and Creatures Of The Night, and severing ties with longtime manager Bill Aucoin), that this newest decision could prove to be a permanent disaster. Less than one month after Lick It Up's release, Kiss embarked on their next tour. With its massive battle-tank stage, Kiss stormed through Europe and the United States with the most raw, energetic show in the band’s career. Fans who had seemed skeptical about seeing their heroes without their legendary warpaint were now convinced that Kiss had simply taken the next step toward their evolution. Lick It Up was the first Kiss album to go Platinum since 1979s Dynasty. After completing the Lick It Up tour, Kiss knew that their fans would always be eternally loyal. ~ Robert V.
