The show honored writer/director/producer Mel Brooks, pianist/composer Dave Brubeck, opera singer Grace Bumbry, actor/director/producer Robert De Niro, and the youngest of the bunch, singer/songwriter Bruce Springsteen, who turned 60 earlier this year. DeNiro was introduced by actress Meryl Streep, Brubeck by Herbie Hancock, Brooks by Carl Reiner, Bumbry by Aretha Franklin, and finally, Springsteen by “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart, who said he was qualified to intro the Boss because he, too, was from New Jersey and he firmly believed that the singer/songwriter was the illegitimate baby of Bob Dylan and James Brown. Springsteen was also was saluted by singers John Mellencamp, Ben Harper, Jennifer Nettles, Melissa Etheridge, Eddie Vedder and Sting.
