This print shows the legendary Guenther Rall, considered by many to be the finest pilot of the Luftwaffe, in action against the pilots of "Hub" Zemke's "Wolfpack" 56th Fighter Group over Germany in May, 1944. After downing two P-47 Thunderbolt fighters and nearly downing the famed leader of the 56th Fighter Group, Rall found himself outnumbered and outgunned. He narrowly cheated death on this fateful day but went on to become the world's third-highest-scoring ace of all time with 275 aerial victories and eventually formed lasting friendships with his one-time American opponents. General Gunther Rall fought in the Battle of Britain, the Mediterranean Theatre, on the Russian Front, and in homeland defense. He was commander of III JG-52, II JG-11, and JG-300. He flew all the front-line prop fighters including the FW-190 Dora. At war's end, he became the third highest ace in history with 275 victories, earning the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.
