Description: In Vinculis; or, The Prisoner of War, Being the Experience of a Rebel in Two Federal Pens, Interspersed with Reminiscences of the Late War, Anecdotes of Southern Generals, Etc. by A. M. Keiley, published by Blelock & Co. (New York), 1866. Year: 1866. Small hardcover, 216 pages. A scarce first-hand account of a captured Confederate officer at two Union Prisoner of War camps--Point Lookout (Maryland) and Elmira (New York). Keiley was contemptuous of his captors, especially the Camp surgeon at Elmira, Dr. Eugene Sanger, whom he felt was intentionally killing Confederate POWs, and the camp's African American guards. General Grant also received his ire: (from the preface): "'On the 10th of June, General Butler sent a force of infantry under General Gillmore, and cavalry under General Kautz, to capture Petersburg, if possible, and destroy the railroad and common bridges across the Appomattox. The cavalry carried the works on the south side, and penetrated well in towards the town, but were forced to retire. General Gillmore finding the works which he approached very strong, and deeming an assault impracticable, returned to Bermuda Hundreds without attempting one.' --Report of Lieut.-Gen Grant, 1864-5. This is all that General Grant has to say as to his complicity in the wickedness of acquainting me experimentally with the internal arrangements of Federal prisons, and as to his indirect responsibility for this pamphlet; and the trifling importance he attaches to the matter is very conclusively exhibited in the fact that he mistakes the date: it was the ninth of June, not the tenth. Of this fiasco of the immortal enemy of secessionists and spoons, I was for five months an unhappy victim. What I saw, and heard, and did during that period, I have endeavored, in plain phrase and unembellished, to detail in the following pages." This scarce historic book is in poor condition overall, being a former NY Public Library book, donated from the collection of Gordon Lester Ford (see bookplate photo). The exterior does not have library markings but has scuffing and some lost to spine ends, front blank endpaper is chipped and detached, blue library stamps on back of this page, bottom of title page, and back of title page, as well as old tape on back of title page. The binding is tight and the rest of the pages are in good condition, with age toning, except for the rear blank endpaper which has staining. The red text block edges also have some scuffing/color loss that may be due to insect predation.
