Description: FEATURED: A really gorgeously illustrated book on the famous early Italian explorers and their discoveries, I GRANDI NAVIGATORI ITALIANI, profusely decorated from cover to cover with Art-Deco era stunning colored scenes by Beryl Hight Tumiati, and written by Guiseppe Fanciulli, and with an introduction by Benito Mussolini and Piero Parini, no less. This First Edition Hardcover book was published in 1931 in Rome, Italy, and is still in pretty remarkable condition, given its age, storage, wear and use history, and covers the most famous of the early Italian explorers, who launched off to Africa, Portugal, and the New World in the name of Italy, and found all sorts of wondrous places. Ms. Tumiati's fabulous colored two-full page side-side scenes are in almost mint condition, with no signs of fading and stunning printing- there are 10 sets of these two-page beauties, along with many other very cool and great stylized colored illustrations throughout. These really enhance perhaps an otherwise dry and scholarly book, written during Mussolini's rule as the Fascist Dictator of Italy; we could not find out why Mussolini and Parini wrote the introduction, other than the book was written to perhaps support Italy historically and also politically as a powerful leader in the world. The author, Fanciulli, was also a well-known composer and song writer, who did operas as well as popular songs. This very beautiful book has a strange group of talented artists and noted political figures involved with its creation, certainly, but we feel it is the superb artwork here that is the fascinating thing, not who went where and why and when. It is also a wonderful book for anyone who loves Italian history, and that Golden Age of First Explorers wandering the earth in large ships; it is in Italian for those who wish to read it as well as drool over the many pages of gorgeous artwork! This is a book which has been lovingly read and re-read, complete with some minor issues of age and use, and is a book which we hope will be appreciated and shared by your family and friends, both young and old readers, who love having beautiful books in the home. MEASURES: 11 inches X 8.75 inches X 1 inch thick; with 130 beautifully printed pages of superb artwork and text, Hardback First Edition, created in 1931 in Rome, Italy and written by Giuseppe Fanciulli, illustrated by Beryl Hight Tumiati, and printed on beautiful thick paper; the colors chosen for the artwork are fantastic and the illustrations are stylized and captivating, especially the ten double-page ones! Little could be found about the artist, Ms. Tumiati, and we wish we could find more of her works! We know her husband, Gualtiero Tumiati was a well-known Italian movie actor and also active in their own Avant-garde theater, The Blue Room, in Milan. We believe she was British but lived most of her life in Italy, working as an actress and artist. The book does have some spots, stains, smudged fingerprints, which come with age and use, and binding could be more sound, the covers are worn and faded, but as with most beautiful aged creations, it is still a glorious book to have, once you've opened it and start to flip those pages, and see all the characters and scenes before you! A great read and a great re-read for all the readers, young and old, in your home! Who doesn't love a beautiful book! We pack your valuables with care for safety and security.
