A magnificent book, written with great attention to detail and a model of what a good regtl history should be. Narrative divided into two parts: first, WAFF evolution and campaigns up to 1919 (concentrating upon the East Africa operations of 1915-18); second, history from 1920 to 1961 (concentrating upon the Burma campaign of 1943-45). The story concludes with the Southern Cameroons commitment of 1959-60. One of the last of Gale & Polden's very high quality publications. (Regiments of the Empire: A Bibliography) Both the authors of this work had distinguished careers in the Royal West African Frontier Force. Colonel Haywood's first period of service was from 1903—1907 when as a Captain in the Lagos Battalion he took part in the Kwele-Ishan operations in Southern Nigeria in 1905-1906. His second tour was from 1910-1914 at the end of which he was Commanding the Southern Nigeria Regiment and he then took part in the operations in the Cameroons and Nigeria from 1914—1916 and in which he commanded a column. Later he was Assistant Director Recruiting, West Africa from 1916-1917. Finally he was Inspector General West African Frontier Force with the rank of Temp. Colonel on the Staff from 1920-1924. Brigadier Clarke's first tour of duty was as Assistant Commandant and Staff Officer (G.S.O.2) Nigeria from 1935-1939 with the rank of local Colonel. In 1940 he was appointed D.A. & Q.M.G. Headquarters West Africa with the rank of Brigadier and in 1941 Commanded the 5th West African Brigade and Gold Coast Area. In the Great War Brigadier Clarke served in Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine and in the Second World War in France 1939-1940, North Africa and Italy. 24 x 16 cm. xv + 540 pp + b/w photo plates + fold-out maps.
