He was a student of Toyohiro, and his works are known as "Kyoka-hon no Ukiyo-e" (Kyoka poetry). A student of Toyohiro, he began his career as an illustrator of kyoka (comic poetry) books and actor pictures. In 1838, he accompanied the procession of the Shogunate's Hachisaku no Goma-zou (horse dedication) in Kyoto. The following year, he published 53 Stations of the Tokaido Highway as a result of his impressions at that time. It was well received, and he went on to become a landscape painter. Thereafter, he produced masterpieces of famous places in various countries and Edo (present-day Tokyo). His representative works include "Toto Meisho" and "Meisho Edo Hyakkei". Meisho Edo Hyakkei (One hundred Famous Views of Edo)Hiroshige Utagawa was a master of ukiyoe landscape prints. In his final years, from 1856 to 1858, until just before his death, he continued to produce "Meisho Edo hyakkei (One hundred Famous Views of Edo). It consists of 120 paintings, including "Akasaka Kiribatake Amezukei (Evening View in the Rain)" by Hiroshige II after the death of Hiroshige I, and a catalog by Baisotei Gengo. The works cover most of the famous places in Edo and its suburbs, and can be considered a compilation of Hiroshige's famous place paintings. The composition is characterized by the extreme enlargement of the motifs in the near field, and this drastic trimming is said to have greatly inspired European artists such as Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Lautrec, as well as Impressionist painters.
