George Henry Harlow - born in London, was an English painter best known for his portraits. He worked under Henry De Cort, then under Samuel Drummond, ARA, a portrait painter, but after about a year he entered the studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence (President of the Royal Academy). It is said that this move was made at the instigation of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, but Harlow's natural affinity for Lawrence's painting style would suffice to explain his choice. Harlow paid Lawrence generously for his recording and the right to copy, but was contractually not entitled to any instructions. Harlow spent about eighteen months in Lawrence's studio, copying Lawrence's paintings and occasionally drawing preliminary fragments of Lawrence's own work. A disagreement over Harlow's work on one of Lawrence's paintings led to a break with Lawrence, and Harlow prevented a reconciliation by painting a caricatured sign for an inn in Epsom in Lawrence's style and with Lawrence's initials. From then on, Harlow pursued an original system of art education. He vehemently opposed all academic rules and principles. A young, headstrong and impatient man who is good looking and has a friendly disposition, he is very popular in society. However, he feigned an extravagance in dress well beyond his means, a superiority in knowledge, and an easy conversation that often offended even those genuinely interested in the development of his genius. His weaknesses caused his friends to nickname him "Clarissa Harlowe". Nevertheless, he worked on his art with zeal and enthusiasm. He possessed quick powers of observation and a good memory, which enabled him to do astounding feats such as painting a satisfactory portrait of a recently deceased gentleman named Hare, whom Harlow had only met on the street once.Though he opposed the Royal Academy openly , he was a candidate for the Academy, but only received the vote of Henry Fuseli. With a portrait of Dr. He exhibited Thornton in 1804 for the first time at the Academy. In later years he exhibited many more portraits. His practice in this area was extensive. His portraits are well thought out and, while largely reminiscent of Lawrence's manner and style, have their own character. His portraits of women were always graceful and pleasing. The painting is set in a beautiful handmade frame with leaf metal, which is not auctioned, but is a free addition to the painting. Age-related condition is visible in the photos.
