Description: France ca. 1870: The Sensual Concert in the Harem, Delicious Miniature Painting Here's a small, intensely evocative Orientalist fantasy, a miniature oil on board created in the late nineteenth century by an anonymous, gifted French artist. The setting is a lavishly appointed room with weavings, pillows, and a tiger skin that functions as a rug. On the left, a languid lady lies supine on her couch, her fan in hand (it gets warm in harems) listens as another woman (her servant? lover?) serenades with a long-necked lute. It is, of course, a dream image, but it radiates a kind of emotional heat... Dimensions are about 3.5 inches by 6 inches, attractively matted and framed out to about 8 inches by 10.5 inches. Condition is very good all around, with lovely colors. It's amazing how much detail the artist managed to delineate in a small space. You and I can't afford an Ingres, but this little gem will arouse some reveries and feelings. Priced moderately for something quite desirable. Shipping within the U.S. will be $20, but only $9 if you don't require the glass and frame; the mat is included in any case. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
