Please excuse any glare in the photos. This plate is approximately 8 3/4 inches in diameter. Unpacked, it weighs 14.0 ounces. It has detailed, glazed decoration, designed by Florence Balducci, which depicts a scene from Jean de la Fontaine's fable, The Fox and the Stork (or The Fox and the Crane). This would be a whimsical addition to a collection of Gien Fables dishware. Identification This piece is marked beneath, "GIEN Fables F. Balducci made in france faience fait main depuis 1821." On the top side, above the fox and stork scene, the plate is marked, "Jean de la Fontaine." The age of this piece is not known. Per Wikipedia, in the fable, a stork is invited to eat with a fox, but the soup is served in a bowl; the fox can easily eat it, but the stork can not. Then, the stork reciprocates by inviting the fox to eat, serving the food in a narrow-necked vessel; the fox is unable to eat as the stork consumes the food easily. The lesson of the fable is that one should treat others as he would like to be treated. Condition This plate looks great overall, with no cracks or chips. It has light wear from use, with some short and fine, scattered scratches. There are light marks to the unglazed foot. As made, there are kiln stilt marks beneath.
