Description: Ferocactus latispinus This solitary barrel cactus is one of the smallest, and one of the most distinct. It has a large distribution throughout Mexico, yet at roughly 12"-16" at maturity, you'd have to look more closely to find it in its arid desert habitat. The most distinct feature of this plant is the one enlarged and flattened central spine growing from each areole and curving downward to create a hook, often red but sometimes yellow, and for which it got one of its more sinister nicknames. The spines are interesting indeed, but the 1.5" purple flowers that arrive in early to late autumn are a beautiful seasonal surprise as well. You'll receive one of the 1"-1.5" rooted plants in the photos, bare-root, without soil or pot. This plant is seed-grown. For best growth Soil/Medium: coarse, well draining, cactus/succulent soil Light: minimum 4-5 hours direct sun (be mindful that need some sun protection when this young, with morning sun being best) Water: deeply every 2-3 weeks; less or not at all in the winter Ferocactus latispinus grows in hot arid regions of Mexico, where it receives little water and little protection from the sun. The substrate in its natural habitat is very rocky, so it requires good drainage and good airflow to remain healthy and robust. This is a very easy cactus to care for, but its slow-growing nature takes some patients. It blooms at a younger age than some of its relatives, so your patients is well-rewarded. *Shipped USPS Ground Advantage, on Mondays, excluding holidays. *Usually arrives in 3-5 business days from shipment date, depending on destination. *Combined shipping is available, contact me with your request before purchasing. *No phytosanitary certificates or other documentation will be provided.
