Description: Original expressionist oil on panel by Hungarian painter Károly Kernstok (1873-1940). A circa 1920s Avant Garde composition of people walking a wide tree lined avenue in the winter snow. The painting measures approx. 14 x 21 1/4 inches and it is painted on a outstanding hardwood panel with sliding dovetail battens that prevent warping. It is signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner and the reverse bears a couple of penciled notations as well as a couple of faint rubber stamps. Painting and panel are in excellent condition. Károly Kernstok (1873-1940) was a Hungarian Expressionist painter working in the early part of the 20th century. He studied at the School of Design in Budapest and was a pupil of Simon Hollósy in Munich from 1892, and soon after studied at the Julian Academy in Paris from 1893-95. In 1896 he returned to Hungary and worked at Benczur's school for three years. After further studies in Paris in 1906, his style evolved toward stylized postimpressionistic oils emphasizing forms and lines. Kernstock emigrated to Germany in 1919 and lived in Berlin until 1926. When he returned to Hungary, his style was primarily Expressionist. The last period of his life in the 1930's shows a strong influence of Etruscan painting. Kernstok's graphic works together with his copper engravings are of great signifance and his lectures and articles were often published in art journals and newspapers.
