Description: Louis XIV (Louis-Dieudonné; 5 September 1638 – 1 September 1715), also known as Louis the Great (Louis le Grand) or the Sun King (le Roi Soleil), was King of France from 1643 until his death in 1715. His verified reign of 72 years and 110 days is the longest of any sovereign. Although Louis XIV's France was emblematic of the Age of Absolutism in Europe, the King surrounded himself with a variety of significant political, military, and cultural figures, such as Bossuet, Colbert, Louvois, Le Brun, Le Nôtre, Lully, Mazarin, Molière, Racine, Turenne, Condé, and Vauban. Here you have an absolutely superb original Jean Mauger medal dated 1683 commemorating the completion and tasteful royal appointment of the Palace of Versailles. This applied both to its furnishings/interior design as well as its culinary arts, which are displayed on the high relief engraving on the reverse. 2 statuesque females in see-through gowns receive the airborne Mercury, about to land on a slab of medal (gold?). One plays a lyre, while the other holds a basket with venison and boar. Fine urns, a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables and a theatrical mask adorn the ornate tables leading into the chandelier-hung great hall. All told, a paean to the hedonistic, epicurean Sun King whose high relief portrait appears on the front. The billionaires of the present age would be hard pressed to match his palatial lifestyle as the French Treasury was his bank account. Rare and historic 240-year-old trophy medal descended from the Palace of the French Royals!
