This great plant gets large round leaves with prickles on them that float on the water surface, and purple flowers. The seeds are commonly roasted and eaten in some countries, and as such it is uncommon to find them available to grow, as nearly all of the seeds are used for that purpose, so we were very pleased to finally find a source for germination tested and viable seeds of this amazing plant. The plants can be grown in water from 12 to 36 inches deep or so and they like warm water for fastest growth and best blooming. These are reportedly hardy to USDA zone 8 (although some sources claim that they are tropical, so we will be testing some to see how they survive in our zone 8b winters here), and they prefer full sun, but will tolerate light shade.
