COLLECTOR'S NOTES included. Theodore Roosevelt, who lived from 1858-1919, served as the 26th President of the U.S., 1901-1909. TR was an American statesman, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer. He is depicted on MOUNT RUSHMORE alongside fellow presidents WASHINGTON, JEFFERSON, and LINCOLN. As a child, "Teedie" was sickly and pampered. Theodore entered HARVARD in 1876 and upon completion, he was elected to the NEW YORK STATE Assembly in 1881 as a member of the Republican Party. In between sessions he spent time ranching in the DAKOTAS and went on extended big-game hunting expeditions. Roosevelt married ALICE LEE in 1878 and they became parents to a daughter, Anna. Alice died a couple of days after giving birth to Anna. Theodore then married EDITH CAROW in 1886 in LONDON. Theodore and Edith lived at OYSTER BAY, NEW YORK, with their three lively children: Anna (Bamie), Elliott (Ellie). Corinne (Conie). TR once admitted that: "I did not usurp power, but I did greatly broaden the use of executive power." TR's rousing rhetoric may not have scored points with his GOP colleagues, but it united and strengthened the American people in times of international war and domestic strife. He integrated his exuberant personality, a vast range of interests and world-famous achievements into a "cowboy persona" defined by robust masculinity. Roosevelt served as a lieutenant colonel in the Spanish-American War. An immensely popular figure, Roosevelt served as Vice President under WILLIAM McKINLEY, until an assassin's bullet mortally wounded McKinley in 1901. He led his "Rough Riders" at the BATTLE OF SAN JUAN HILL. Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York in 1899 and became the youngest man ever elected to the Presidency just a few weeks shy of his 43rd birthday. During his two terms as President, he championed the rights of 'the little man,' and made a war against 'malefactors of great wealth,' in his regulation of trusts. Roosevelt's "bully" reputation was well established when he took Presidential office in 1901, following the assassination of President McKinley. He supported such reforms as the MEAT INSPECTION ACT and PURE FOOD and DRUG ACT. Although Congress complained he had usurped its powers, he worked for the conservation of natural resources and greatly expanded the National Parks. He oversaw the construction of the PANAMA CANAL and adopted the 'big stick' policy giving the U.S. a sort of police power in Latin America affairs. He adopted an "open door" in China and mediated the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. After he left the White House, TR led a two-year exhibition to the AMAZON basin where he nearly died of tropical disease. Roosevelt is best remembered for expanding the powers of the presidency and of the federal government in support of the public interests in conflicts between big business and labor and for steering the nation toward an active role in world politics, particularly in Europe and Asia. He won the NOBEL PRIZE for PEACE in 1906 for mediating an end to the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), and he secured the route and began construction of the Panama Canal (1904-1914.) TR is generally ranked in polls of historians and political scientists as one of the five best presidents. 342 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
