Description: EARLY-MID 20TH CENTURY EUROPEAN GRAPHITE SIGNED VINTAGE WATERCOLOR OF CITYSCAPE, W/STREET/ANTIQUE BUILDINGS, DOUBLE MATTED IN CONTEMPORARY GOLD GILT FRAME(Signed illegibly 'S. Chaput' or 'S. Chulet' in pencil)Circa 1930-1955Early to mid-20th century European fine art & linear, gestural Modernist landscape painting DIMENSIONS:Frame: 22 3⁄4" Height x 19" WidthImage: 15" Height x 26 1⁄2" Width DESCRIPTION: For sale is this wonderful, conceptually linear driven, Post-Impressionist/early Modernist signed watercolor landscape painting of a European cityscape, featuring a city street, lined with antique, gambrel, mansard roofed large apartment buildings. The original work of art is a watercolor painting which heavily relies on black line and its energetic, gestural, highly kinetic application of paint to describe the scene before the artist, most likely done on scene and 'en plein aire.' The linear watercolor or 'painted drawing' is then infused with episodes of olive green, burnt sienna brown and a light peach, flesh colored wash. The work is clearly, although unfortunately somewhat illegibly signed in graphite 'S. Chaput' or 'S. Chulet' in the lower right corner of the pictorial field. The work has an unbroken back brown dust cover and a metallic gold New Jersey picture framer's label affixed to it. The work is under glass and hasn't been removed. Great visual energy, lyrical movement and artistic clairvoyance. Most likely Belgian or French. Undisturbed and untouched. Fresh to the marketplace and recently discovered on the New Hampshire seacoast. Very beautiful. CONDITION:Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition.
