The M4 Sherman tank played an important part on the US side in the three-year conflict. One such type used was the POA-CWS-H5, a flamethrower version of the M4AE8 Sherman. Mounted in the turret was the original 105mm howitzer, with a coaxial flamethrower gun added alongside it. Flame tanks were developed as a solution to the difficulties of eradicating the enemy holed up in bunkers and caves. The M4 Sherman defeated heavier tanks with superior numbers, and by using outflanking tactics to strike thinner enemy flank armor. The Sherman tank--named by the British--was fast, maneuverable, mechanically reliable, easy to manufacture, and effective in its infantry support role.
