Description: Oil on canvas impressionist seascape painting of green waves breaking on a beach, 12" by 24" (17 3/4" by 29 1/2" framed), signed on overlap "D. W. Parshall '95". This is a work by a Buffalo-born artist, DeWitt Parshall (1864-1956) who is today best known as a California painter from the Santa Barbara area. Parshall studied in Dresden and Paris and painted in the east before heading west to California in 1917, where he became noted for his beautiful landscape paintings (and his son Douglass also became a noted artist in his own right). At least one painting of the Maine coast has appeared in auction records. This example was acquired in Arundel, in southern Maine. The painting is dirty, with yellowed varnish, and there is stretcher bar show-through and dry craquelure especially in the dark portion of the central wave. Professional restoration will transform it. The period frame has light wear. There is an old Montclair, New Jersey framer's sticker on the frame.
